Debbie and I started the 10 Hour Work-week to help others become financially self-sufficient in an area lacking employers and available jobs. We live with our cat, Rama, in Currituck County, NC, a rural county with no towns or cities and which dates from 1668. It is the most northeastern county in NC and comprises a long narrow mainland with Currituck and Albemarle sounds on each side, and 3 non-contiguous areas including our northern beaches where the famous Corolla wild horses thrive.
Historically this has been a tourism supported community with most private sector employment in hospitality and construction. The largest employer is the county government and many residents commute to VA to work. Many jobs were lost with the closure of the Ford assembly plant in nearby Norfolk and perhaps more with military cut backs. Our backgrounds are in accounting, marketing and business development, most recently related to real estate, but the economy has eliminated that option for a lot of people like us.
I am an elected member of the County governing board and both of us assist on the boards of local charities. The increasing needs in our area made it urgent we develop a plan like this which anyone with internet access and a little effort could use to replace their income and become self-sufficient. Taken to its potential anyone could become financially independent in a reasonable amout of time. We hope you will find it rewarding for your family too!
Other factors important to us were the company's reputation, the healthiness of its products and the philosophy of sustainability, community involvement and corporate responsibility. Since Debbie was stricken with breast cancer in 2008 we have been very concerned with the factors affecting our health from the environment, our diet, the health care system and any thing else we could learn about. We are so thankful there is a company like the one we chose that shares those concerns and actually does something about them. << Next >>
